Interest Rates

Interest Rates

Dataset: INTEREST_RATES (US)

This dataset provides a daily time series of key US interest rate benchmarks, sourced from FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data). It is designed to give analysts and applications a single, consolidated endpoint for the most widely tracked rate indicators in fixed income and macroeconomic analysis.

Fields returned:

  • 10YearTBillYield — The daily yield on the 10-year US Treasury note, the most important benchmark rate in finance. Used as the risk-free rate for DCF models, equity valuation, and as a proxy for long-term growth/inflation expectations.
  • 3MonthTBillYield — The yield on the 3-month Treasury bill, a proxy for the "risk-free" short-term rate and closely tied to Fed Funds policy expectations.
  • 10Y2YTreasurySpread — The spread between the 10-year and 2-year Treasury yields. This is the canonical yield curve indicator — when positive, the curve is normal (longer duration bonds yield more); when negative (inverted), it has historically preceded recessions.
  • 30YearFixedMortgageRate — The national average 30-year fixed mortgage rate. A key indicator for the housing market and consumer credit conditions.

Metadata fields:

  • date — The observation date (daily, weekdays only)
  • country — Always "US" for this dataset
  • id / key — Dataset identifiers (INTEREST_RATES / US) for use in API routing
  • updated — Unix timestamp (milliseconds) of the last data refresh

Use Cases

There are many use cases for this dataset, here are some examples:

Equity Research & Valuation Using the 10-year yield as the risk-free rate input for DCF models and as a discount rate benchmark; monitoring rate regimes that affect sector rotation (rate-sensitive sectors like utilities, REITs, and financials).

Yield Curve Analysis Tracking the 10Y-2Y spread as a recession leading indicator; identifying curve steepening/flattening trends that signal shifts in Fed policy expectations or growth outlook.

Fixed Income & Credit Benchmarking corporate bond spreads against Treasuries; duration risk management; pricing interest rate derivatives and swaps.

Housing & Mortgage Market Analysis Monitoring the 30-year mortgage rate for housing affordability trends; used by homebuilder analysts, mortgage REITs, and consumer finance researchers.

Macro Strategy & Asset Allocation Characterizing the interest rate regime (rising, falling, flat) to inform cross-asset positioning; correlating rate moves with equity risk premiums and commodity prices.

Risk Management Setting rate-sensitive thresholds for portfolio alerts; stress-testing bond portfolios against yield spike scenarios; monitoring for yield curve inversion as a systemic risk flag.

Quantitative & Factor Models Including rate level and spread variables as macro factors in multi-factor equity models; backtesting strategies across different rate environments.

Corporate Finance & Banking Benchmarking loan pricing and net interest margin; informing capital structure decisions based on the cost of long-term debt.

Highlights

The INTEREST_RATES dataset delivers the four most consequential rate indicators in US finance — the 10-year Treasury yield, 3-month T-bill yield, 30-year fixed mortgage rate, and the 10Y-2Y yield curve spread — in a single daily-refresh API call. Spanning the full spectrum from short-term policy signals to long-term growth expectations, it serves as the macro backbone for equity valuation, fixed income analysis, housing market research, and recession risk monitoring. Whether you're sourcing a risk-free rate for a DCF model, triggering alerts on yield curve inversion, or contextualizing a sector call against the rate backdrop, this dataset provides the essential inputs in a clean, structured, and programmatically accessible format.
