EIU Global Sustainability Index

EIU Global Sustainability Index

The Sustainability Index is a three-pillar framework that covers environmental, social, and governance. It's based on a methodology of 220 indicators across 150+ geographies enabling:

  • Cross-country comparison
  • Risk modeling and macro overlays
  • ESG-aware portfolio construction
  • AI/agent-driven country analysis

The dataset follows a 3-layer hierarchy:

1. Indicators (Atomic Layer)

IED01Snumber, nullRenewable energy capacity growth score (0-4). The average annual growth rate in renewable energy (RE) capacity over the previous three years inclusive of wind, solar, marine, geothermal and biomass sources. Capacity is defined as the maximum output of electricity that a generator can produce under ideal conditions and is measured in megawatts. Electricity generation refers to the amount of electricity that is produced over a specific period and is measured in megawatt-hours, % of total. This indicator is weighted equally with ED02 (renewable energy share); taken together, these indicators penalise countries with low RE capacity (even if growing) and shrinking RE capacity (even if large).

IED12Snumber, nullLow-carbon transition exposure score (0-4). This metric considers two dimensions: type of exposed asset class and timing of exposure. A country can be exposed because of its reliance on fossil fuel resources in the ground or its significant reliance on carbon-intensive built capital, such as power or industrial plants. A country can also be exposed because it currently relies on carbon-intensive exports or is expected to rely on carbon-intensive rents and revenues in the future as a result of its large reserves of fossil fuels and the young age of its carbon-intensive infrastructure. This is a broader indicator than ED03 (exports of coal and oil), because (a) it extends to all carbon-intensive industries (eg large fertiliser producers score poorly), and (b) it penalises the future producers who will add to carbon emissions (eg industrialising countries that are heavily dependent on thermal power score poorly).
